Waterfalls in Nigeria and their locations

Nigeria is enclosed with numerous natural resources, the beauty of some of them are astonishing. Waterfall is one of them, the serene environment, the beauty and atmosphere is always mesmerizing. Waterfall is an area where water flows over a vertical drop or a series of steep drops in the course of a stream, or a river.

Some of the waterfalls in Nigeria are listed below.

Awhum Waterfall

It is located at Amaugwe village in Awhum in Enugu State. The waterfall is breathtaking and cascades down a large rock formation. The Awhum waterfall is 30 meters high. Some parts of the water remain warm throughout the season.  

Erin – Ijesha Waterfall

It is also known as Olumirin waterfalls. It is located in Erin – Ijesha in Oriade L.G.A of Osun State. It was believed that the waterfall was discovered by one of the daughters of Oduduwa in 1140AD. But “the nation” an American magazine wrote that the waterfall was discovered by a hunter in 1140AD. The spectacular thing about this waterfall is the assemblage of 7 districts.

Owu Falls

It is situated in Ifelodun L.G.A of Kwara State. It is 120m above the water level and cascades 330 feet down an escarpment, with rocky out crops to a pool of ice-cold water below. It is one of the most charming waterfalls to visit in Nigeria.

Assop Waterfalls

This waterfall is in Jos, 70km along Jos-Kagoro road on the top of the Jos plateau. It is one of he most adorable falls in the plateau and Nigeria at large. Assop waterfall is a natural waterfall occurring at the bottom of the famous Hawan Kibo. It is perfect for picnicking, bird-watching, sightseeing, swimming and other social entertainments, film-shooting.

Agbokim waterfalls

The waterfall is situated in the Etung L.G.A of Cross River State, very close to its border with Cameroon. The scene of the waterfall is captivating, it is fed by 7 streams that gush loudly into the immerse pool, that why it is called “seven faced wonder”. It is quite a great place to visit for tourist and nature lovers.

Farin Ruwa waterfall

It is situated in Wamba L.G.A of Nassarawa State. The falls was discovered by the then British colonial rulers of Nigeria in the 1950. This is among the highest waterfalls in Nigeria because of its height. The water drops at a height of about 150 meters (492ft). if properly harnessed will be a great tourist centre for Nigerians.

Arinta waterfall

This amazing waterfall is situated in Ipole Iloro of Ekiti State. The king, Oba Babatunde Oladele said that the waterfall has been in existence before Oba Alapa-Ajalorun, one of the ground children of Oduduwa who founded the town in the 14th century. It is a place for sightseeing, relaxation and appreciating natures great gift.

Gurara water

It is situated in Gurara, a L.G.A of Niger State. The waterfall is approximately 30 meters in height. The waterfall was discovered in 1745 by a hunter called Buba. It is a historical falls and one of the Nigerian’s famous tourist attractions.

Obudu Cattle Ranch Waterfall

The Obudu waterfall is not as big or large as the other waterfalls in Nigeria. But it is a fascinating place for visitors who live to take photos and picnics around the area. Obudu is a natural resort, wild animals such as monkeys, gorillas and rare birds usually visit the waterfall for a drink. Is really a nice place to visit.

Effon waterfall

Effon waterfall is in Effon-Alaaye, Ekiti State. It is a 10 meters plunge of raging limpid waters. This waterfall is such a good place to visit for both tourist and for sightseeing.

Matsirga waterfall

It is located at Baladon in Advwan District of Fantswam in Kafanchan, Kaduna State. This is a haven for tourist, photographers etc. if you are in Kaduna, try and visit this nature endowed waterfall.

Kwa waterfall

It is situated in Cross Riveer National Park and derives its source from the Kwa River not too far from Calabar. It is always a delight for visitors because of the tropical position of the waterfall, the rain forest and vegetative park.

The numerous waterfalls are good and safe to visit, so in your next excursion or picnic you can visit it and experience the wonders of nature in its fullest.
